Welcome to The Culture Co., a company born out of love for farm fresh produce and fermentation. For some, fermentation may seem scary, but it’s just the simple science behind preserving quality harvests.
⠀
The word “culture” comes from the Latin word cultura, a form of the verb colere, which means “to cultivate or till”. Culture refers to the community of bacteria that transforms milk into yogurt but also to the practice that creates language, music, art and literature. ⠀
⠀
We’re committed to preserving culture in all its forms. And we promise to stay sustainable by sourcing local, pesticide free produce from passionate independent farmers on our island.
Packaged by hand and sold raw and unpasteurized, we take pride in our bold, vibrant healing foods.
At The Culture Co., we believe in using certified organic or chemical-free produce when crafting our fermented vegetables. Same goes for our sourdough breads — organic all the way! The end result just isn’t blow mind unless the ingredients are the highest quality possible. We want to eat food that has been grown with our health in mind, not just profit. We only produce food that we want to eat ourselves.
It is so important to us that we know our farmers. We like to know the face and story behind all the fresh produce we receive. Building a direct relationship with farmers helps their financial stability, reduces wastage, provides seasonally fresh veggies and imported food mileage down. (Some of our produce even comes straight from our kitchen garden!)
There’s a staggering amount of food that never makes it off the farm or leaves the market just because it doesn’t fit the average beauty standards. Instead of being wasted, we preserve those ‘misfits’ with hopes of teaching our customers to celebrate the beauty of natural diversity.
We’re dedicated to having the least harmful effect on the environment. All of our packaging is plant-based, compostable and recyclable. We have the opportunity — and the responsibility — to create change and inspire others to follow suit.
Our head chef is a Trinbagonian with Italian and Middle Eastern roots. The Culture Co. is a beautiful blend of the two.
Plagued with a series of autoimmune diseases, Teresa found improved health by switching her diet to include more plants and probiotics (yay, fermentation!) and exclude almost all meat, dairy and gluten — with the exception of sourdough. While studying culinary arts in Sicily, Teresa learned that the fermentation process allows for easier digestion of flour. Then her life changed, and she knew she needed to share this goodness with everyone else aspiring to live a healthier life. Food has the potential to cure and heal illnesses — and that’s something Teresa doesn’t take for granted.
Also special shout out to our cofounder and creative genius Elizabeth.
